Big changes coming to the series!
Today I finished the prototype for the first adventure in the completely revised series. Frostfall has been re-written from the ground up to include an actual combat system, cleaner coding, and less crude content. You can re-download the series to see what the future of Crypt Shyfter will look like, or take a peek at the screenshots below:
I've been meaning to update the series for a few years now. Ever since game 1, the coding has been different from game to game, the fight scenes have used different logic (d20 rolls, d6 rolls, STRENGTH + WEAPON + LEVEL in some games but ATTACK in other games, etc...).
I didn't do any of that stuff for artistic reasons- I coded each game differently because I didn't know what I was doing and I kept searching for a combat system I actually liked.
You've probably noticed the last 8 or 9 games have used a very similar combat system while all the games prior to that were completely random. Some games didn't even have combat at all! Anyway, the turn-based JRPG-style combat is the system I've come to like the best, so I'm re-writing all of the games from the ground up to include that coding.
Another thing that's been bothering me for the last year or two is the vulgarity in a lot of the games. Most of the adventures started out "fairly" tame- a few swear words here and there, but nothing too crazy. But after receiving feedback from commenters, it became apparent players wanted more and more sex and debauchery.
I gave it to them, and the reviews got better. So each game got more and more extreme, until at one point I actually ended up writing and selling purely smut games. No plot. Just sex.
Anyway, I don't think that stuff needs to be in the series. The games are totally absurd- you eat pizza to regain HP, they're written by "Kung Fu Space Barbarian," and the website is called videogamepizza.com. You're a "beefy barbarian" who fights evil alien robots and rides dinosaurs. The cover art is cartoony and silly.
But some of the games are just flat out vulgar.
It's a debate I've been having with myself since about game 4 or 5, and I never had the guts to make the switch since the crude scenes always seemed to be the favorites with reviewers. But I've finally resolved to update the series and cut out all the swearing and smut. Sorry if that was one of the big draws for you! But as I've gotten older, those scenes have become less amusing and more cringe-worthy. They gotta go.
And so here we are! It will be a long process to update all the games, re-writing most of them from scratch, cutting some scenes and adding new content. But in the end I think it will be worth it. The series will be something that makes me really proud to show off to just about anyone who is interested in text-based games.
I hope you like the new look and direction of the series! Thanks for sticking with me and reading this far :)
